Empowering Adults with Disabilities at Haven Acres Farm
Adulthood should not mark the end of opportunity.
Turning 22 should be something to celebrate — a new chapter of independence and possibility. But for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, it can feel less like a milestone and more like the finish line. The programs disappear. The friends disappear. The routines, the classrooms, the companions they saw every single day — all of it, gone almost overnight. There's nowhere left to apply everything they've learned, and the lifelong learning that should continue instead comes to a halt. And on the rare occasion a program does exist, families are lucky to find one that offers real choices, with a good balance of activities that continue building life skills rather than just filling hours.
Too many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities spend their days at home with nothing to do and no one to see — days that are empty now, when they used to be full of purpose. No classroom to walk into, no schedule to follow, no coworkers or classmates waiting for them. Advocates call this the "services cliff": the moment a young adult with IDD ages out of the public school system, usually around 22, and the guaranteed support they'd always known simply ends. In school, services are a right. In adulthood, families have to requalify for everything — waiting months or years for funding, waitlists, and program openings, often with no local options at all in the meantime.
The truth is, families find themselves asking "now what?" every single day. Instead of looking forward to what's next after school ends the way other families do, they're left anxious — wondering where their loved one will go, what they'll do, and whether anything will exist for them at all.
The friendships that once came naturally through school start to fade. The skills they spent years building go unused, and without structure, that progress can even start to slip backward. Along with it, the sense of purpose and belonging they once felt — knowing they had somewhere to be and people who counted on them — quietly disappears too. It's a hard truth, but it's the reality many families are living. It's also exactly why The Creative Haven exists — to make sure that reality doesn't have to be permanent.
The Creative Haven at Haven Acres Farm was created to be that missing place — somewhere everything a person has learned, and every friendship they've built, can keep going instead of ending. A place where adults with IDD are given back a sense of purpose, and the chance to be an active, valued part of their community again.
A Place to Grow, Not Just a Place to Go
Haven Acres Farm is the setting for our program — a working farm in Flatonia, Texas, where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can spend their weekdays learning, creating, and connecting. It's a farm, a garden, a kitchen, a workshop, and a classroom, all built around real-life skills and real relationships.
Our program is organized around several core areas:
Creative & Performing Arts — music, drama, fashion, floral design, and hands-on crafts
Farm, Garden & Trades — gardening, agriculture, and woodworking
Culinary & Baking — cooking skills and a baking academy
Life & Vocational Skills — independent living, financial literacy, and employment readiness
Health, Wellness & Community — recreation, nutrition, friendships, and belonging
A typical day may move from a morning circle, into the garden, into the kitchen, and out to a recreation or social activity.
Why This Matters
Growth doesn't have an age limit. Adults with IDD should never lose the opportunity to keep learning, building friendships, and contributing in ways that matter. That's the idea behind our tagline: Creating Opportunity. Building Purpose.
Be Part of the First Classroom
Our most immediate goal is establishing our very first classroom — the foundation for everything that follows, in a program built for adults with IDD in rural Fayette County.
If you'd like to be part of it — as a donor, a volunteer, a sponsor, or simply someone who wants to follow along — we'd love to have you.
The Creative Haven at Haven Acres Farm is a Texas 501(c)(3) public charity serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Fayette County, Texas.
